Lethally Close
.
Up close, the dove is such a lovely sight,
her eyes down to her beak outlined
by iridescent tinges of pale purple.
'Neath her wings, day-old chicks snuggle
like clumps of cottony clouds in summer
that has drifted too low in the nest.
Nearby, unseen, a snake coils motionless,
fangs poised to strike. But caravans of ants
stream out of its rotting eye sockets!
