Good wishes for my enemy contest

Leniency of Forgiveness

Sometimes I cringe when feeling the burdened need
to forgive someone who's hurt me with an odious deed.
But I cannot slink away into dark aubergine shadows
when I know it's a necessary step that I must take.
It's a Bible based principle I must never forsake.

I cannot be expected to be forgiven if I don't give pardon.
It's not God's ire that I seek or for His heart to harden
against my mistakes. I'd wish an enemy no ill-will, nor
find fault with his or her flaws, faults or their railing.
If I did, I would be the one whose mercy is failing.

Forgiveness is granted only when the askance is spoken.
It must be conveyed, not kept a thought, a mere token.
For how could anyone know of the leniency of the virtue
if it remains unspoken, hidden in aubergine shadows?
For absolution to be offered, forgiveness we must disclose.

Deb M December 31, 2023 at 7:32 AM Hi Lin….forgiveness comes easy for me and l do not hold a grudge….but l don't always forget and with that l keep my distance and stay away from the negativity….life is way too short for angst, grudges and bitterness. I say my piece when needed and move on! Though at times l do get very disappointed and lose faith in humans due to the way some people act. A great poem Lin thought provoking my friend! We're all fallible, and as imperfect humans we need to be forgiven for our faults and mistakes, too. You're correct in that it's not always easy to take the high road, but the better person does see it as a way of finding peace within him or herself.
