Notes About The Poem

Legos Nursery Rhymes Contest  -  Sponsor: Eve Roper

Legos Are Fun For Everyone

I'm bested by my grandson, who's not an engineer
because he outbuilds me in Lego construction, I fear.
My contention overwhelms me with dread and woe,
because Lego toys are addictive, as I'm sure you know.

I built a house only using the colors of red and blue,
but always find I'm one Lego short. What am I to do?
A nine-year old outsmarts me, doing it much better.
He's focused on the task at hand... a real go-getter!

All over the living room floor, they end up scattered.
I enjoy feeling like a kid again... that's what mattered.
Sometimes I erect something equal to an architect,
but too soon it breaks apart and my effort is wrecked!

One day I carefully assembled a church and its steeple,
proud of what I'd built... pews and itsy-bitsy people.
Then, my grandson said, "Nana, you used every Lego!"
Then he dismantled all my work and deflated my ego.

Legos present a challenge to adults and kids alike.
They're more fun to play with than riding a new bike.
I lose tract of time when I'm playing with Lego blocks.
Never want to put them away so I don't look at clocks.

They seem to pop out every Christmas, the kids can build amazing things with them. I usually just watch, or glance over during the commercials of the football game. LOL Good luck in the contest, Lin. A fun read, Thanks for sharing, Bill

Another late reply from me, Bill. Please forgive my tardiness. Thank you for commenting. My grandson is now 9 and we've decided to build our Lego town while watching football. He's old enough to be able to do both. lol

Sort of like stamp collecting, can lose myself for hours looking at the silly things, quickly to get them off the table if someone unexpected shows-up, seeing one on the floor, hoping I am not outed. Excellent, delightful read. Well done, Lin.

Hi Joe and thanks for reading and commenting. Yes, whatever holds our interest and is fun, is something we should embrace. What's wrong with being a philatelist? Nothing. Maybe one of your visitors might find it interesting.

Nothing beats quality time with your grandson Lin. You should take a pic of your creations. Tom

Hi Tom, thanks and that's a great idea. I'll be with him over Thanksgiving so I just might do that. Unless he wants to spend more time building forts or swimming. I'm up for anything!

A nice poem about a creative toy; Legos are truly wonderful Lin. My grandson really didn't get into them, but my son did. Thanks

Kids these days have too many more technical toys to keep them enthralled, but I'm glad you had Lego time with your son. Thank you, Jeff.

Hi David and I'm delighted with your comments. We'll see how it fares in the contest, but with all of the positive remarks it's already gotten... that's good enough for me. Thanks ever so much.

What a great Lego poem Lin, the interaction with your grandson (not an engineer) is vividly expressed with blocks and colours, and he even took apart your church; some great humour in that lol! Great one for the contest, cheers David

True Lego story, my 11 year old only allows me to find the right piece, never assemble :) I can only write poems:(

Hi Margarita and thanks for commenting. It's really nice to hear from you again. Be thankful that your 11 year old allows you to find pieces. Soon, it'll be, "Mom, I can do this by myself."

What a delightful picture of you and your grandson not only building with legos but using legos to build and strengthen your bond! Wonderful metaphor, Lin. Thank you for this precious picture. Best wishes for the contest Blessings.

Thank you very much, Sam. Despite living 600 miles apart, we bonded early when I was able to spend more time with him. It's never been broken, and he is one of my blessings.
