Kokopelli

it is chiefly
the hump on his back
that gives grandeur
to the gait of the bearer
more than his whistle
or his antennas

whispering
one estimates off-the-cuff
what the treasure will be
as his steps approach
proclaimed by rumor

"Water carrier was there,
snakes have been searching,
Thunderbird flew over again
and the sun has been called.
Kokopelli comes,
comes, comes...

His abundance! "

it is for ever
the inconclusive time
catching the tracks
of the carrier and his treasure
in stone
that gives him breath
