Just Drop the Baby

Let’s drop the baby out the window fifteen stories down.
I stare into the child’s eyes; why would I do that?
She trusts me. I ponder it but not meaning to.

You are a wimp. Just do it!
That voice again.
Who is it?
Why would they be telling me this?

I run with the baby
To get out of this hotel room
To get away from the voice

Of course she follows.
Screaming even more loudly.
I feel relief when I hand the baby back to her mother.

Not in her arms of course
Because then I would be arrested.
Police are all over that floor.

I leave her in the hallway in a laundry basket.
Hoping the right person will find her.
The voice is screaming as I return to my room.

This was an interesting read. My sister is schizophrenic and hears voices. I'd always wondered what that would be like. Your poem gave me a peak.

Juliet, in my family it is normal to hear voices, to see people who are supposed to be "gone" and to smell them, and be touched by them. I am glad I could give you a glimpse of what your sister's life might be like.

Heya Caren quiet powerful, I can feel the madness in here, it’s actually tangible Having a baby stolen by an unpredictable psycho, brings even more menace to the poem, great psychological write, cheers David

Are you describing a nightmare you once had?

No. I am inventing a story that should scare people.

Exactly! And we look at her and have no idea. For she looks incredibly normal which is the point.
