Just a Scratch
fragrance of rose petals was air bound and swirled in abundance
lush temptation mixed fondly with the scent of her cinnamon skin
the Buddha had asked for Lotus but positions may vary and change
Joseph sat under a prickly pear tree with his mind in the calm wind
a moment of stillness transcendence levitation and imminent meaning
no sentient suffering but simply a teasing challenge of contentment
a butterfly nestled on his loin cloth and cradled just one moment
to cherish in gratitude what should never be taken for granted
and so he imbibed in nature’s sweet calling with infinite thanks
all his life he had been told to be aware of thorns’ lacerations
yet he fondled the spicules with the soft brush of all his senses
they were not meant to insure just tools for injection of courage
a few superficial scars in the search for ultimate peace sheltered hope
of compassion and kindness bestowed by awareness and balance
harmony never follows an easy path to conscience and happiness
he meditated to escape the rat race of modern dogma and demands
escaped into a secret world of a Higher Power and spiritual delight
pricked his skin and drew blood at the sharp edge of containment
sanguine dreams filled his presence and reminded him of solitude
he proceeded to mix ichor with the essence of his lover’s embrace
and together they cradled the roses and disappeared into the night
