Jubilation in the city of Galveston ensued when Union soldiers brought to the enslaved News of an Emancipation that had been proclaimed by Lincoln Two whole years before the Texan slaves Ever even heard of it! Equality, of course, was a long time still coming, yet Civil Rights came! Nowadays, we should all honor June 19th, which is Traditionally celebrated only by Texas as a legal state holiday. Hope for harmony and the realization of true freedom must never be forsaken. July 14, 2018 for Edward Ibeh's Juneteenth Poetry Contest

Nicely written, Andrea. As a history note to all, the Emancipation Proclamation issued in 1862 ONLY freed the slaves in states that were not under union control, i.e. the confederate states. At that time all northern states had abolished slavery with the exception of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. These states continued to allow slavery even after the Civil War had ended. So contrary to popular belief, the Civil War was not 100% about slavery.

You are correct, sir. It was originally about states rights. The southern states wanted to secede from the union and form their own country. they said it was their sovereign right. Lincoln did not agree. That's when he made his "house divided" speech. The rest is history:)

It's amazing to me that even those few states you mentioned still were allowed to have slavery. Anyway, thankfully in my poem I don't say anything to contradict what you say!!

Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves, so the union soldiers would not get the idea they were fighting to free the slaves. His ulterior motive was to preserve the union. he knew if the soldiers thought they were fighting to free the slaves they would dessert. And that is history for today. Arguably the greatest president of all times. Nice write, Andrea:)

yes, Abe was very smart. He knew he had to be very "political" about it all. He was a product of his times but still he had that inner compassion and wisdom many men failed to show.
