John Duns Scotus was a fortunate man
Beliefs such, could have been burnt at the stake
Luckily he got away with elan
Urging fellow souls to rise and awake
His life a mystery, as also death
There are rumours he was buried alive
Was he in meditation or took meth
Be it what it may, his teachings survive
God’s choiceless choice to create all that is
Bestowing upon man, gift of free will
Thus we choose for ourself, pain or bliss fizz
Paving path for soul’s ascent, as voids fill
Scotus held views, quite ahead of his times
Claimed spiritual practice, a science
Wherein we each must feel love and light chimes
Aligning with God, in staid compliance
Deeper teaching was univocity
Infinite in God and finite in man
Then ‘thisness’ or let’s say haecceity
Concepts theologists put under scan
Doctrine of immaculate conception
Like setting a cat loose among pigeons
Theory got hot and cold reception
Angst when scarred are beliefs of religions
There’s more to be said, of wisdom he taught
What counts is he sought to search for the truth
Cajoling souls to exit narrow thought
Urging all to explore God’s laws forsooth
