It wasn't all that long ago, The State of the Union

It wasn't all that long ago when covid
choked the world with it's grasp.
People became anxious, some belligerent, when
asked to merely mask.
While others stock piled toilet paper to
wipe their sorry ass..
A million Americans suffered.
A million Americans passed.
Our health care system became overburdened
with such a daunting task..
People craving answers, turned to the experts to ask.
Our Ex. President gave misinformation with a
racist slant, calling covid the "Chinese virus",
he'd over and over recant.
Innocent Asian citizens were aggressively attacked.
This former President refused to abide by the precautions that
were advised. He wouldn't wear a mask and the medical community he criticized.
How many of us Americans would still be here today, if we had
stupidly injected bleach as this President once did say?
Four years wasn't all that long ago dear friends.
Is this the type of leader that Americans want again??

Oh wow this is powerful dear nancy, and today we dont remember all this, reading this made me think, how forgetful humanbeings are, and how you are one the few and precious ones that see beyond and remember things. Brilliant write worthy of all the accolades. Congratulations on receiving potd! I have been away, but catching up now. I hope you are doing fine and well. Sending you light always

Hi Ink, I appreciate your genuine response but I think my musings were just that. I have no anger nor regret for expressing what I remember 2020 to be like. It's interesting though how people seem to forget the anxiety, anger, and attacks on innocents Chinese citizens in our country..

Hi Deb, Thank you very much. Lin said political poems on this site always bring divisiveness and this recognition opened up a can of worms unfortunately showing how divided we are at present. Blessings to you

Granted there was a lot of confusion and misinformation during the first year of the pandemic. Opinion out here in the world suggests that some of the cases may have been mis-reported as C19. While we may never know the full truth, a lot of people lost their lives for whatever cause and that is never good. Congrats on your POTD honor

Congratulations on your POTD, Nancy Kaughman! Ovation! His right-hand man Guliani-from lawmaker to lawbreaker. He was sweating covid bullets during a speech about covid as his hair dye was leaking down his forehead, grosse. Arizona has apologized for Election interference-indicts 18, including Guliani. (Clapping loud) "Madcap" Republicans, (not all) it never ends my friend. They pay in the end millions and millions! They claim to be Christian and yet... Enjoy your day! Warmest Hugs ~Anaya [[Loving PS for posting it as POTD]] ;) it brought my faith in them back

Dear Anaya, There are a few poets here unfortunately who like to leave their subtle digs disguised in their comments. I generally try to rise above them. I respect those that spend days, hours, before posting but I am not that patient with my penning's nor do I want to be in contests as I am basically non-competitive. I just wish others would be open to different view points shared but it is what it is.

Not to worry..." on PoetrySoup. This censorship does not apply to politics! The political arena is fair game. However, writing poems featuring hate speech targeting, for instance, Jewish, Arab, or Islamic people is not tolerated" You should tell them that if they get offended then they don't understand what happened, unfortunately, but I think it's more that they don't want the facts, and there is no understanding politics without knowing their own history! You should tell them that. I agree with you and there is nothing emotive here!
Kaufman Avatar
April 30, 2024 at 10:22 PM
Well my poem apparently caused some very emotive responses. My intention was simply to remember where we were under that leadership. I am not trying to sway any one nor offend others, just ask them to remember and choose the person who does have ethics and experience.

I just posted for the Cruela Devil contest…Senator of South Dekota Kristi Noem was, devoting an entire section of her memoirs to the day she shot a high-spirited puppy named Cricket to death, then executed the family goat for having a bad attitude. "I hated that dog," Noem wrote …she was 14 months! She’s on Trumps Vice President ticket!

Hi Nancy, the Covid pandemic brought out the good in some people, and the bad in others. Unfortunately, Covid is still with us. I don't think the U.S. political leadership in general handled the dire situation well. A big Congratulations on POTD. Enjoy your special poetry day. :)

Hi Joseph, It's true and I realize that Dr. Fauci and N.I.H. were funding the research in that lab where things went array. If China is one of the many countries that hate us, why are we still doing this? I'm baffled. Thanks for the comment. Blessings

I stand with Keith on this one, Nancy. I did not take the poke and only wore a mask when it was required, (Like going to see a dr). I also think Mr Trump was a very good president and would like to see him re-elected. Call me names, hate me, I dont care. I am an American and I have the right to say and believe what I want. At least he's a Christian! Congratulations on POTD. Great to see your work honored.

Dear Nancy, A STANDING OVATION! What a poignant reflection on a tumultuous time in our recent history. It captures the chaos and suffering caused by the pandemic and the political turmoil and division that exacerbated it. Congratulations on being recognized for your insightful and thought-provoking work. YEAH! - Blessings, Daniel

Differences of opinions on political issues have been bones of contention here for years. That won't change, but opinions should be accepted as a right to be stated without anyone being criticized or called names to the point of arguing. It's the civilized way of handling issues.

To answer your last question…hell yes! It case you weren’t paying attention it was a deliberate “gain of function” virus from China funded by Fauci and friends. Its name denotes its origin or first awareness of just like the Spanish flu and German measles. And I didn’t wear a mask either because the experts that were silenced and censored advised me not to. I love a good rant so well done on your POTD.

Nancy...The earliest documented case was March 1918 in the state of Kansas in the United States! It was Spain that first reported it, that’s why they call it Spanish flu “The pandemic broke out near the end of World War I, when wartime censors in the belligerent countries suppressed bad news to maintain morale, but newspapers freely reported the outbreak in neutral Spain” yep first here in Fort Riley!!!!!
