["It Was For Me" was first published in my chapbook, "The Lady in the Pink Hat," Candor Press, 1969.]

I stood at the foot of Calvary My head bowed low in shame I thought of the hate and mockery And I knew I was to blame. I saw the fear and misery Upon the furrowed brow I heard the wails of agony I felt the cold wind howl. The vacant stares of anguished kin The eyes now red and dry I knew it was for sinful men That Jesus had to die. I was sinful, weary--lost, Did no one care for me? No one but the lonely Jesus Hanging on the tree. I stood at the foot of Calvary My head bowed low in shame I thought of the hate and mockery And I knew I was to blame
