The poet mines the cave for treasures sought; its walls encrusted with events long past. Chipping away to find that buried thought, emerging with gold nuggets at long last. Then comes the day it all falls into place, remove one word – the message feels diminished. The poet, feeling visited by grace, stands up and smiles, proclaiming “it is finished.”

Dear John, congrats on your win! The imagery is just beautiful! This makes it to the poetry soup anthology I will be putting together! Your second stanza is a lovely end to a poem and I will be using it for anthology part 2!

My first impression was that this was going to be a spiritual themed poem with that quote from the Bible, "It Is Finished" ... but I see now that it's about poetry (which in and of itself could be considered a form of spirituality in the way it empties your inner most thoughts). You expressed yourself very well here, John. "Chipping away at a long forgotten thought" << waiting too long, in my experience, and the thought slips away unrefined ... gotta write while the inspiration is fresh!

I know the phrase you mean, Christ's last words on the cross. I was aiming for a less gravitas than that, I'm sure you noticed! I'm learning to write in the moment these days; to be in touch with those present signals that make for the smell of freshly baked bread! Then sometimes we want to commit to poetry a past event. Thanks for the visit and comment! ~ John

Funny, for me I often start with the last lines, then work backwards - so I know its finished when I get to the beginning :)

Thank you Caren. It's a question I like to ask poets - how do you know when a poem is finished? Usually they say, "I just know".
