It All Fades Into a Memory
It all fades into a memory--
The presents, the people,
All the glitter and the wrappings.
The wrappings we discard;
All the rest we wear out
Or forget.
Yes, Christmas comes around
Every year,
And every year we are older--
Maybe richer, maybe poorer,
But older.
So many crumbs!
So much fodder for mice.
Bloated we stand,
And docile we fall over.
The bells, the bells!
They are all ringing.
They are screaming.
The message of this song
May not make it to your ears.
But hear this
Forgotten one:
Nobody is too good
For misfortune.
Even the best of men
Sometimes fail,
And screaming they fall.
