INCONVENIENT RHYME TIME REPOSTED

I was prompted to repost this poem. Written in 2000 before I'd ever heard of Soup. I put it on Soup in May 2020. I believe all who compose, be it stories, poems, songs, etc., is personally familiar with the contents of this poem.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have lost more lines
        than I have written
           for they often come unbidden
               with no consideration of where.
              	        Words have not the discipline
                                 to be pen and paper aware.
                                        Many rhymes evaporate in air ...
Driving in my car,                                 Often in the kitchen
navigating traffic,                                 while cooking and fixing,
poems form like magic.                       versus take shape.
I cannot release the wheel                   Should I drop a plate
to make words stick -                           or let water over boil?
rhymes will not congeal                       No, so I hesitate
inside my automobile.                          and lose the wordy roll.
Many yell for toilet paper -                  Enjoying the outside,
I need another kind,                             such as beach or lake,
oh, so hard to find                                poetic lines will overtake
inside of my shower                             my joyous reverie.
when rhymes cross my mind.               I can only forsake
Bathroom poetry hour                         the rhyme gifting me ~
defies my writing power.                      let it be, set it free.
Visiting with friends,                             Drifting off to sleep,
verses form in my head                        laying in my bed,
or metaphors descend.                        stanzas fill my head.
It would be impolite                             I know they will escape
to grab a pad, pen and write.              and remain unsaid.
I can't beg, "hold your thought           My memory won't cooperate,
while I see a poem caught."                 the lies will disintegrate.
Words are the love of my life
         yet they surely mess with me,
                  cause me frustration and strife.
                         Is bad timing fate's own cruel error?
                                    Is it every writer's inherent terror
                                                for lines to arrive as imagery waste
                                                            because they are impossible to paste?
I began writing at 12/13 and as Dad was career military, I toted them from place to place and that continued as an adult. I have them all. The one exception are poems a roommate I had at 18 destroyed with bleach and coffee grounds due to jealousy over someone I was dating. She knew that would pain me. That was the only time in my life I experienced a fist aching to hit someone. (I didn't but the ache lasted a long time.) I'm glad you enjoyed the re-posting!! CayCay
Omg in 2000? 5 years before I was even born? 😱 Gawwshhhhhh m gonna have a stroke, but the brilliance of your poem has swept me away! And how absolutely resonating that is! Technically I'm a baby here in poetry lol, but i face this problem every moment, words slippinnnn n tosssinnnn away ~ especially when I'm in d middle of somethin, that too whenever I am about to sleep! 🥹 It's insane sometimes, makes me anxious that I won't remember n lose my lines. Sigh! I just loveeee your writing styleee and how you've formatted your poem, to show those phrases n sentences scattering away somewhere in the memory... Ahhh! You're far more experienced in poetry and time than I am, also your way of expressing really intrigues me! Soul-stirring as always! Sending you fairy starsz and healing magic dear CayCay 🧚🍁✨💫🦋
Hiya, please don't have a stroke when I tell you this: there are a lot of people on Soup older than 26 and someday it could be you. There are a lot of people here 5 years older than me, and on and on. I am you and you are me and we are all together. THANK YOU for the fave, fairy starsz and healing magic (was the healing magic age related? I'm teasing). I appreciate your enthusiastic response!!! Cute thing. Be golden ... CayCay
Yes, so true, CayCay, sometimes words come when I am trying to sleep, and then I just memorize them to jot down the next morning, beautiful poem😊
I hear you, CayCay; always a pencil and paper at my bedside, and when I was working, and forced to drive, I had a tape recorder should something pop into mind that I wanted to pursue later. Poetry rules the poet, an independent spirit we share. Blessings my friend. Have a great writing day!!
This is really an enjoyable exploration of the unruly nature of inspiration and creativity, CayCay. It humorously portrays a writer's struggle to capture fleeting thoughts and words. Excellent Job
I don't know if I had seen this before. I don't really have this problem. Maybe just a little bit. I don't often have poetry come to me until I sit down and focus. Cute one, Caycay. I enjoyed it but seeing it by my phone, it's difficult for me to follow the lines. Maybe when I am at my computer, the lines will appear differently!
Spoken like a true poet. Pinning, 📌 I found a great feature, saves⌚️ I liked because you can be inspired during moments when tied up forcing yourself to let musings escape your mind never recapturing the same impression, it happens often. Wow yr. 2000 me, I was poetry clueless. Kudos 💐
Love this clever write. Was 'Murphy's Law' ever more evident?! ... Amazing that with all these 'lost poems,' that you still find things to write about! Keep smiling, Gershon
Yes, you're right - this is very relatable, but thanks for saying it so well! Also, you mentioned the kitchen. Too many of my poems come from the kitchen and that's why they're about food.
So true! When you’re a poet, words, ideas and all are rolling around…sometimes I have a chance to write some down and they go nowhere. LOL! Life of a poet! Great repost!
