In the Corner

In the corner he was sent
if there should be an “incident.”
A naughty child was he and so
to that same corner he would go,
then sit and stew there, discontent.

This boy was not one to relent.
At school he’d curse. How he could vent!
He then was placed by the window
                                                   in the corner!

The boy grew older; then hell-bent,
he ran off rather than repent.
His mother wept. We came to know
at last he ended on death row,
where now he sits with his torment
                                                  in the corner.

I really like how you describe the child's journey - troubles in adulthood often have their roots in childhood. And the rondeau form fits perfectly! As for the contest, I think different people just like different styles. There are some contests I don't bother to enter because I know I can't produce what the judge prefers.

Children are so often belittled for simply being kids which can be devastating for their self esteem. Wonderful poem Andrea :)

I do remember those times...the "good" teachers used that punishment...the nuns would smack your hand with their rosary beads...it's a tough call on how to reform a problem child

Such an excellent write, Andrea - especially so, and sad, because it's so believable, so real-life.
