Imagine You're There

Close your eyes and imagine you're there
You're naked and shaved as they stand and stare
Watching your loved ones herded away
As you await your fate, it's their lies that say

Earlier that day we disembarked from the train
We're in a place called Auschwitz in the pouring rain
An unfamiliar smell hangs in the air
This feeling I get, is of total despair

We enter a building where clothes and shoes lie in mounds
On the periphery of me I hear screaming sounds
Families, fathers mothers daughters and sons
In our Hebrew tongue, why are we the chosen ones

We exit this building and enter another
Where we are told to remain calm and await our shower
No water is felt as the quietness delivers
Motionless some lie, as I await my deathly shiver

Although my poem, it's based on factual events during WW2 at Auschwitz Concentration Camp. I've written a few poems based on such atrocities. Silent Train is another poem, also Holokauston. Another part of history that interests me, although terrible times for the Jews. Thank you for being at this poem Olive, it's really appreciated, James xxx

Congratulations James,....this thought provoking, emotional poem, brought shivers, and sadness...and yet...was so excellent...that eyes must not hide from what did happen....so that it never happens again. Well done. Love, Carrie

I feel like this was written by someone who experienced it. The image you presented is so intense, so sad. Beautiful write. The best of luck in the contest.

You captured the horror, putting yourself right there, so sad. I wish you the best of luck in the contest with this wonderful entry.

I like the way you carry the reader to the present tense, James. It makes the horror seem even more real. To "enter" and "exit" is an expected part of life, but there should never be horrors like those you describe so well. Best wishes in Abe's contest. Love, Carolyn
