I'M Talking 'Bout Stingers

I guess I’m more accustomed to the modern sting these days; the one that comes by e-mail or the phone. They might hurt the pocket with the modern scamming ways - but Mother Nature’s stings bite to the bone. I’m talking ‘bout a paper wasp, or the angriest of bull-ant; perhaps a hornet or a bee, and that Queensland stinging plant. I could be in the scrub casting out a fishing line, or relaxed while I stand beside a tree without a thought, but ignorant to a home that isn’t mine, and its residents who start attacking me. I’m talking ‘bout assertive spiders; that little blighter jumping jack. Damn mosquitoes and march flies, and scorpions sometimes attack. It may be every few years, but there does come a time, when backyards need a bit of cleaning out, so there will be disturbance that is not a pantomime, and lackadaisical is not what it’s about. I’m talking ‘bout stinging nettle, or prickly pear annoying hairs. The European Wasp and chiggers, and white-tail spider toxin scares. When fishing in an estuary; the beach or in a bay, you never know what bounty it can bring. You’ll always have a fighting fish trying to get away, and some of them can give a nasty sting. I’m talking ‘bout butterfly gurnard; the torture of a sand flathead spike. Feeling of pain after sunset, and a victim when biting midges strike. Some might be quite obtrusive - and some a fine-looking thing, but they all come with a warning - I’m talking ‘bout the sting.

I enjoyed the introductory transition and the bountiful list of assorted items that you might have to deal with. Plus you used a very rich vocabulary that was a treat to follow. You are very clever and I am sure you can outsmart those tough pests!

G'day Duke ... thank you Duke. I reckon we've all got our own stingers and suckers, and also, our own remedies for the blighters - catch you soon - Lindsay

You have so many stinging and biting things that I don't think I would survive your country. Mosquitoes, wasp and bees plus stinging nettles is all we have to worry about and some areas have rattlesnakes but not in our area. love phyl

G'day Phyllis … oh yes, there's plenty of bugs to spoil a bbq, but basically, it's not bad. At this time in spring, the biggest danger is swooping magpies that lasts about two months. There's even apps to warn you where they are - thanks Phyllis - Lindsay

I've been immune to fire ants and mosquitoes bits, wasp and bees stings as far back as I can remember ......It seems like their venom just doesn't do it for me.

G'day Jerry … it appears that when they sting you Jerry, they die - be careful; your blood might be sought for an anti venom for they who are allergic - thanks once again Jerry - Lindsay

Hi Lindsay, Enjoyed your poem and the message it brings. Modern day scams and con artists invade our internet and phones daily. But I have also exp. mother natures sting. I was stung by a wasp on my hand, whilst on a trip to the game park and far away from any hospital, fortunately I always take appropriate medication with us when far from home. Very sore experience! Kind Regards, Jennifer

Hello Jennifer … wasp stings, especially paper wasps are very unpleasant and unlike the bee, they can sting more than once. I'm certain everyone can relate to being a victim, and pleased to read that you are prepared - thanks Jennifer - Lindsay

I can certainly relate to this poem Lindsay. Minding my own business in my recliner a centipede invaded our home, crawled up the chair and bit my toe. When I saw the two punctures I knew instantly what it was and rushed to find the meat tenderiser. The pain is excruciating. My daughter about 8 at the time, and I were swimming safe in a lagoon we thought, when jellyfish welted our legs like we were whipped. Both were the most painful stings imaginable. Your poem returned memories chillingly!

Hello Connie … this poem does tend to revive our past experiences. My own experience with bull ant stings are very vivid. The pain is excruciating from these inch long ants - Thanks for sharing your experiences Connie - Lindsay

G'day Timothy … I believe we all learn to cope or avoid our own little wake up callers. Some snakes are ordinary, but the Tassie Devil growling is what you folk need to play on Halloween night - it's real; it's frightening, but the devil won't attack humans unless they are dead, and then, they don't even leave the bones - thanks Mate - Lindsay

No Rico … this poem is more or less about our friends in the southern states - what you mention are at least 2000 miles away and in crocodile country - thanks Rico - Lindsay
