If Love Delays Any Longer

If love delays any longer,
and I make up exscuses
to commit myself and settle down,
this name will not be carried on.
Gray, brittle hair to a hide a face of shame;
hands with brown spots to show my age...
face drowned in worries...that I could have prevented.

Feeling death before it comes,
makes every tomorrow bleak,
days will be lived without scope,
just living them as they had no meaning,
fearfully waiting for darkness to come...
and cuddle up in a blanked that hides moonlight;
no kisses tasting like petals of roses to leave their sweetness.

If love delays any longer,
I'll have no one to embrace,
to tell my feelings with trust;
anything I will do will be worthless.
Built castles will tumble down and disappear
in an ocean that has seen only tragedies;
tears and screams will avail to nothing, I'll be a forgotten being.

Staring through a rain-pelted window,
couples rush to get inside and watch it
with delightful eyes to appreciate and admire
what Heaven sends down for an abundant season...
with cries of babies being born from wombs
of young mothers, who thank their Creator with prayers;
my last wish is that some will also be mine and call me father.

Having no children, I can really relate to the sad thoughts in your poem, Andrew. It is too late for me now, but perhaps your wish will still come true. I hope so! Congratulations on your success in Drake's contest. Love, Carolyn

aging, lost, loneliness, and then in the end to feel love of one's own children, very good enjoyed reading.
