If I Were Blind
I wish I were blind,
at least I would hear,
smell,
and feel the world more deeply.
Evil and violence
would not be seen by me.
They say that what the eyes don’t see,
the heart doesn’t feel.
I would have more peace if I were blind,
because I would never see war.
I would choose a true woman,
not based on her physical beauty,
but on her feelings
and her way of being.
If I were blind,
I wouldn't see the sky,
but I would hear better
the sound of the waves rushing to the shore,
like the sound of a crowd
singing a beautiful song.
I wouldn’t see the fish
and the shellfish,
but I would better feel
their taste.
I wouldn’t see the rain falling on the earth,
but I would better smell the scent of fresh soil the next day,
and carry in my hands the jubilant mushrooms.
If I were blind,
I would be happier,
because happiness
does not depend on what is seen,
but on what is felt.
You don’t need to see to believe,
you need to feel to believe.
Feeling teaches more
than an image.
If I were blind,
I wouldn’t see my beloved’s smile,
but I would hear more clearly
her tender words of love.
If I were blind,
my eyes wouldn’t betray me.
If I were blind,
I would be wiser,
because I would listen better.
If I were blind,
I would see the world better
with the eyes of feeling.
