I Sat and Watched

“I sat and watched him babble like a brook
it took forever to hear the first drop fall
it rained into the water of the newborns
I listened for a moment
then left him to his massive words
tired from his efforts,
sleepy from his speech,
unconsciously conscious 
of his taffy-pulling time.”
