' The books I loved in childhood-- the first loves--
I've read so often that I've internalized them in some really essential way: they are more inside me now than out ' -- Donna Tartt
Parchment lays open by the fire
as evenings stretch and yawn again,
below my shoulders whispers flow
through white lace curtains and then rain--
To somewhere near yet far away
while unsung heroes clutch the day
and eyes hold lines to understand,
a plot, a move which rolls away.
That sometimes fables write themselves
before an ending needs to live,
and phrases awed are realized
so.much to slay, so much to give--
Before the pages turn once more
through white lace curtains, through the hall
how mystery bleeds in my eyes
action throws villains on the wall:
I miss my childhood books. Serpents
reel about this dreamy-dressed face;
and verses paint beautifully
the old sheets igniting a place ,
while nights transform into old age
and wooden dragons droop to creep
between the edges of a page!
