I Love You-Joe

As men, sometimes it's hard to spit out the L word. Of course it's not so hard to do when you are conveying it to your love, father, or friend. But when it comes to siblings, sometimes it's not said as often as it should be. Every time I speak with my two sisters the conversation always ends in "I love you, sis." But for some odd reason when I am speaking to my brothers the conversation ends something like " Okay, I'll see you tomorrow" or " Okay, talk to you soon." Nine years ago my siblings and I had lost our eldest brother tragically in a motor-cycle accident. Thinking back, I really can't recall actually ever telling him outright that I loved him. If only I knew then, before his death, that that would be the last time I saw him, for sure that L word would have been heard in his ears from my lips. So today, on this twelfth day of November, on his birth date, I feel compelled, as a man, to say what I should have said to him many times. And that is- "I LOVE YOU, JOE"

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Brother!!!

let your siblings know
tell them how much you love them
before it's too late

Creative way to go with this regret in your life. I am sure that he knew you loved him though. We just take for granted that the ones closest to us know we love them or care about them. I am sure if he needed you, you would have been there at his side. Sara

Very heartfelt and loving poem, Charles. There are so many things I know in my life I should had done or said and didn't. Yes, it is a heartfelt quilt.

You are so right Charles! Indeed, we do not say such things in life but cry later!

Always a tear of regret and pain shed when we realize that we have missed a farewell, a hug, a kiss, an apology, expressive words of Love to all those we care about and are of inestimable value to us.. If only we are a head of their final stop and just could bare what is hidden inside our souls.. So genuine! So heartfelt what you have poured of beauty and truth many would relate to.. thank you so much for sharing! My deepest regards and blessings.

Love emoted in words, gestures, actions, tender touch, warm smile, sharing, caring, pairing, simply knowing deep within our heart, that the other has a special, sacred space etched upon our soul …

Charlie, although those words are wonderful to hear, those we love know how we feel by our actions. I'm sure your brother knew how you felt. Your Haibun is a glimpse into your heart. A very fine write.

Charlie, a beautiful and emotional Haibun (I really like this form by the way) I bet your brother knew you loved him and is watching from Heaven smiling with pride at what a wonderful man you have become. But, you are right about telling the people one cares about 'I love you' because one day they may be gone suddenly with no time for goodbyes ~ peace and tranquility _Constance

So sad. I know this is heartwrenching, but haven't a doubt that your brother knew anyway. This is a wonderful write. God bless you friend. Love, Gina

Hi Gina, my brother was 10 years older than I, but we hung around with each other quite often. We loved to trout fish together. Yes, he knew that I loved him, and he loved me. But I just wish I had told him before he left. Thanks so much for your lovely comment. Love, Charlie

Hi Charles such lovely sad words. I’m sure whether you said I love you to Joe or not he knew exactly how you felt about him as you did he. Saying I love you is important but actions speak louder than words! Some say I love you and it’s just Empty Words! Hug for you Charles. Debx

Your message rings so true, Charles. I never used to close conversations with my brother Jim with the words "I Love You," but, in the last year (since we lost our sister) I have realized that we are all that's left...he and I, so I try to remember to close every conversation with him with the L word. It has become an easier thing to do, but I hope it will never lose its meaning.

Hi Milton, thanks for commenting. First of all I am so sorry for the loss of your sister. After writing this, the first thing I did was call my youngest brother just to tell him that I loved him. He laughed and asked me what I wanted him to do for me (lol). When I explained he told me that he loved me as well. Great feelings shared!!! Hope you and Jim stay well and continue to share that magic L word. I appreciate you...Charlie

Dear Charles, what you said in your haibun, is so true. We make small mistakes in our life.. and that can not be undone, especially if that person is gone! It is the sweetest gesture you have shown on your brother's birthday. Warm wishes ~ Mala

You are so right, Charles! I have a poem "Tell Them You Love Them Now", it is in my published book. I included it in my eulogy for my brother, who died of Covid in January. He went in the hospital and never got out and I did not see him and did not have a chance to tell him I love him. You are a good brother for remembering him and writing a poem for his birthday.

Oh Marilene, I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. I am truly saddened. We just never know when the last time will be and as unreal as it may seem, tomorrow could be the last time. My condolences to you and your family...Sending love and prayers to all. Sincerely, Charlie
