I Hope It Never Happens To You

I got home late from working one night My eyes felt painful, they didn't feel right I said to my wife “my eyes feel strange" She said “it could be eyestrain or even your age" We laughed about that, I was only forty four I’d get seen tomorrow when we went to the store I looked in on the kids, and then went to bed My eyes were stinging; all I could see was red. The next day I woke up and lay there in fright And I couldn't tell if it was daytime or night I knew I was awake but I just couldn't see And prayed to God it was only temporary. My wife took me to hospital for answers to find And after the x- rays said that I'd gone blind “The x-ray shows damage but more tests we'll do When we get the results back we'll send for you". "At this stage I don't want to give you false hope But of course in the meantime we'll help you cope" The reality of those words I just wanted to die My wife was in shock and she started to cry. I was in a dark place ;wanted to end my life But all I could think of was my kids and my wife. Daily tasks were a nightmare I struggled to shave And all I wanted to do was just lie in my grave. Home was a struggle; I couldn't find my way around I’d trip over furniture and end up on the ground I was so depressed because I couldn't see Unable to do things that really mattered to me. I used to read to the kids and make their tea But now I was just a burden on my family I'd dreamt of one day walking my girls down the aisle To see their happiness and make their mom smile. Other family members supported me too Performing tasks that I’d normally do They wanted to help because they all cared And I’d just sit there isolated and scared I got called two weeks later my results had came through The consultant explained “there’s nothing we can do A build up of pressure caused your retina's to tear You've suffered major damage that we can't repair". My wife took me to a blind group and there I met Jed And he shocked me to the core with what he next said "It's happened; get over it there's others like you You’re dragging down your family and yourself too". “It's happened, you’re lucky so late in your life I've never seen my kid’s faces or that of my wife" In the abyss of despair was a faint spark of light Reluctantly I realised that maybe Jed was right. He told me of his struggles; how he managed to cope For the first time in ten months he gave me some hope I had not accepted what had happened to me Realised I was lashing out at those close to me. My wife took me to classes and I learned to read Braille And stayed the whole time to make sure I didn't fail My confidence grew stronger, I was accepting my fate And thanked God I'd met Jed before it was too late. Some things I do miss like all the sports on TV But my wife is an angel and she explains it to me I've made lots of new friends; I've got a guide dog too And I sincerely hope it never happens to you. I love the message. Sometimes our experiences seem so devastating and then you meet someone who has faired even worse than you.

Such a sad devastating powerful encouraging write! Amidst even the most challenging of life altering circumstances there are still alternative ways of living and pressing forward! We shouldn't take anything for granted! Best wishes!

Thank you Melissa, You are right, with the right help and support of loved ones there are ways forward. The biggest hurdle is actually accepting what has happened to you .But there are major breakthroughs in medical science all the time and what they can do now is amazing .Strange though lots of research has speeded up thanks to wars. Regards Tom

Thank you so much Cheryl, I know as you get older your sight deteriorates over time but to lose it overnight was heart-breaking for her and her family. It took her a long time to get back on track, It's not something I think I could cope with. Regards Tom.

A very poignant tale, and so well written and rhymed Tom. I've read you comments below and am sad for your friend. A retired couple once lived next door to us. She was blind. Her husband hired a piano and she started teaching herself. I used to hear her struggling at first on the scales. About a year later I could hear classical pieces coming from her house. I was in awe. Thank you so much Maria. I think accepting it is the hardest part but once accepted and with love and support then life can go on.we seem to take so much for granted , we look at natures wonders not realising that there are people out there who will never see them. And your neighbour, an inspiration to us all. Regards Tom.

This made me think of a horse I used to own. I learned of a yearling race horse that was going to be "put down" because of an accident severing her optical nerve. I trained her, rode her on a ten mile fund raising event, then donated her to a therapeutic riding stable. I received a letter from a parent of a blind child about how riding Windshadow Breezin, was such a positive influence in his life. Blindness is only as limiting as we allow it to be. Great poem, Tom. Thanks for the memories.

Thank you Rhoda, That was an awesome thing that you did and because of it someone greatly benefitted from it.I would struggle with the feeling of isolation and helplessness' but as you say support and help can make positive changes to someone's life. Regards Tom

Yes, the most difficult thing in life is to accept it with all its ups and downs! I hope this marvelous poem is just a fiction otherwise is the worst nightmare ever imagined for 90% of our information comes from our sight! Wait your confirmation my friend that it is a fiction! If not then I applaud you for your courage and your determination plus I bow before your wife's grandeur! God bless you!

Demetrio's, The actual verse is but my friend had a sister in her thirties who tragically lost her sight overnight from a rare condition and it was so heart-breaking for her and the family.Thankfully she learnt to accept it with her families support. It is so tragic that some people in life have such heavy crosses to bear. And your own problems are so pale in comparison . Regards Tom.

My best friend is blind, is this fictional Tom or are you visually impaired/blind? A heartbreaking story, something unimaginable and heartbreaking..

S.O, The actual poem is but the story is not. A friend of mine had a sister who lost her sight overnight with some rare condition and it was so heart-breaking, her family were only young at the time and she was only in her thirties. It took her a long time to accept it. I think blindness must be one of the worst disabilities' that anyone could have.Thankfully my sight is ok apart from wearing glasses but that's just something that happens as you get older. Regards Tom.

I have a huge lump in my throat Tom, my aunt and mum both have age related macular degeneration and are registered as partially but to lose your sight overnight must be a devastating blow and dealing with the life changing effect must be do hard to deal with. Love the uplifting ending to the poem which shows that with adaptations that life can still go on:-)hugs jan xx
