I Heard Strangers Whispering
They turned up in their Sunday best
To pay respects my mother cried,
I was not sure what she meant
I only knew my father died.
The hearse arrived, people shuffled,
Standing solemn, looking tense,
I heard strangers whispering
A strange affair, it made no sense.
I looked around at all of this
(Rather frightening to a child,)
I knew it was no party though,
For some were crying, no-one smiled.
Apparently he was in a box
A nice one that they put you in,
Some men in suits stepped aside
They were going to carry him.
Then I heard the strangest music
The like I'd never heard before,
A man with a serious face
Ushered us towards a door.
I looked round, mother wept,
Slowly, we walked inside,
At the time I could not take it in,
I only knew, my father died.
