I Am the Bridge
I am the bridge—
Built strip by strip
From the backs of newcomers
And the tears of providers.
I do not falter
When footsteps cross me—
Colorful voices of change,
Fathers, asking for humanity,
Mothers protecting from insanity.
I was built between then and now
Carrying the legacies of those who refuse to whisper in their dreams.
Voices planted in concrete.
To bloom in unity.
I am the bridge—
Nailed together with hope
Wrapped around each bolt.
I am the bridge—
Reaching over rivers and valleys
Where stop signs tower but, anyways, we rally.
I am the bridge—
Where freedom lives
And fear says 'hey'
But we march anyway.
I am the bridge—
Holding strong and steady
As history moves forward
It's equality we're moving towards.
I am the bridge—
Every step is to justice
Each mile we reclaim
For the message lives.
And the message is and always has been...
Black is powerful.
Amen.
