Hwl Innspired
I've never been to Segovia
or even to Madrid.
But I've read Longfellow's poetry
since I was just a kid.
Inspired by his unfamiliar words
as they rolled upon my tongue,
saying gloaming for the darkness
was much fun when I was young.
I made my sister angry.
It would truly strike a spark,
to say come before the gloaming,
when I meant before the dark.
Longfellow was born slightly more
than a century before me,
But he knew things I do not know
and saw things I'll never see.
I memorized his poetry.
my mama had a book.
To irritate my sister
in her pretty book, I'd look.
"The Children's Hour" was my favorite.
I too thought it was fun,
to run and hide from Daddy
when his working day was done.
