How Long

I've never kissed a pig with my eyes closed
Nor have I ever held a hand of time
However, there was once when I proposed
But that was back when I was in my prime

I still recall how much she loved to dance
She'd laugh at me and make my face turn red
She taught me all the secrets of romance
That love was what one did, not what one said

I search the shadows for her purple hue
I take her mem'ry everywhere I go
Its smile has it's own special shade of blue
Its taste so sweet no one could ever know

They tell me only time mends broken hearts
I wonder just how long before it starts.

To be truthful it takes a while to get over a real true love. This was eloquently penned. Thank you for the visit to my site.

Hello Danny, I dropped by to read your latest sonnet here, and I'm very pleased that I did. I always find your turn of expression and the matter-of-fact-nature of how you portray your thoughts and emotions of the moment in your sonnets to be direct and compelling, tempered by an exceptional sensitivity for whatever topic or theme you are writing about. A tremendous sonnet here for sure!! The verses of each of the stanzas and the closing couplet are truly remarkable. Outstanding!! A FAVE!! Best, Gary (P.S. You should win this contest!!)

Lovely and exquisitely melancholy write, Daniel, and one that speaks to my heart ... I'm waiting for it, too, and after 35 years, I think I've paid enough dues, and would appreciate "fate" removing her from every dream. Many loves and laughs later, the longing continues ... unfettered. Awesome poem, friend, going to my favs. Blessings!

Candid romance is always the best, Daniel. Much like this thoughtful peeling of the veil to the heart. An elegantly expressed poem, my dear friend. Love and joy always.

Daniel, this is a winning Sonnet from the beginning of what was a special love to its sad end! It's so unfortunate when we fall in love with people who only stay for a season. Hopefully new lasting love will come along! This is certainly a most insightful piece. Good luck in the contest and I wish you love. Pandita

Such beauty and heartache in your moving and emotional sonnet, Daniel. The loveliness of your stanzas sets up the sad dramatic impact of your closing couplet wonderfully. You paint the extremes very artistically my friend.. Best wishes for a win.. ~Susan
