It's one of the 10 commandments, Exodus 20:7 KJVS Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain."

Many believe this means we shouldn't use Gods name when we cuss or swear. That's probably a good habit to keep from but consider this... Once one is converted to Christianity, we take His name upon ourselves [Christ-ian] and represent Christ because of that.

It also brings to mind the much used metaphor in the Bible of a marriage between Israel and God. And now the church named as the bride of Christ. When a woman becomes a bride, most usually and traditionally, she takes her husband's family name.

This makes her apart of the family officially and legally. Anyway, lots to think about i hope! That is the meaning behind the chorus of this poem/song.

Listen to poem:
[Verse 1]
We're supposed to be the good guys
We're supposed to love, love, love
But I just can't see it
these days when I look at us
[Pre-chorus]
You gotta beam in your eye but you point your finger at me!
Turning up your nose, thinking you are better
Spreading hate…spreading hate you disassociate with sinners
[Chorus]
Do not take the Lord's name in vain
Making us feel ashamed
When we accept Jesus into our lives
We take His name, the name of Christ
It's such a shame …all this dissension
How can you call yourself…a Christian
[Verse 2]
We're supposed to reflect his light
But the light shines brighter in the darkness
Not so each fault and sin can be seen
So they'll see God's light Shining through me
[Tag]
Judge not that ye be not judged
Love how Jesus loves
Judge not that ye be not judged
Love how Jesus loves
How Jesus Looooooooovvvveeeessss!!!!!
[Chorus]
Do not take the Lord's name in vain
Making us feel ashamed
When we accept Jesus into our lives
We take His name, the name of Christ
It's such a shame …all this dissension
How can you call yourself…a Christian!?!
How can you call yourself…a Christian,!?!

Hey Crys you've really been at the song thingy. Theologically speaking, Christianity was still about 1500 plus years off when the ten commandments were given, and nowhere in the OT is the name Jesus ever even mentioned. The Jews would have understood that it was the name Yahweh, or Jehovah that was to be revered, sanctified, not taken in vain (compare Matthew 6:9). Jesus showed deep respect for his Father's holy name (see John 17:6,26). Still, as Christians we take on Jesus' name in a sense too

Think about what happened to the 10 tribes that were scattered btw... they migrated and settled British, Scotland, America, Canada etc... the Christian nations of today are part of Israel. Cool book on that is the Abrahamic Covenant by E.Raymond Capt

I know we don't agree on this point about the trinity but that's whatI believe. Jesus said, " I and my Father are One". But we can still be friends! Xo

also that is why God had to divorce Israel, so legally he could open salvation to whosoever will and graffother nations into the vine. Now the new testament church(the body of Christ) is the bride to be.

I love that you put it to Christian metal Crystol, altho I thought your voice is amazing, I really did think so. Inspiring song and lyrics. Precious words that do make me ponder about what you said "the Bible of a marriage between Israel and God" God also said that this a covenant and has the right to turn His back on those who kill children on His territory (Israel) no matter who. I was compelled to say my peace. Blessings__Anaya
