How Are You
How Are You
By Elton Camp
When a casual acquaintance asks, “How are you”
You needn’t be concerned that you answer true
Even if you actually look and feel as bad as hell
The correct response is, “I am doing very well.”
Don’t any accounting of your many ills begin
It’s a statement with no question mark at the end
Even if you should begin to recount all your woes
In one ear and out the other is where it all goes
Even if you should say, “I am very nearly dead,”
“I’m fine too,” is most likely what’ll then be said
For people very rarely will listen to what we say
They try to be polite, but to escape without delay
If you doubt that what I say is actually correct
Just stop mid-sentence and see if they will detect
