Honorable Mention

It is never one’s intention
Earning “honorable mention”
When you’re entered in a contest or a race.
Yes, you’ve gotten some attention
So that listing, by extension,
Means approval that you really should embrace.

Still, it’s not exactly winning
And it will not leave you grinning
For it feels more like a pat upon the head,
‘Cause you know at the beginning
All your hopes were proudly pinning
On that very first or second place instead.

Since most judgment is subjective
You must know that one’s perspective
May not match or be divergent from your own,
So it’s best to be reflective
Which is rather more effective
Than reacting like you’ve just been tossed a bone.

A bone is better than nothing at all....the Not Accepted N/A...but I get your point Ilene. I am never sad to get an HM...but those N/A's sting. I love your poem! Congrats on your number one placement!

Good luck in the contest. I once won poem of the month in Poetalk publication - all free verse! Did you ever see A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum? There is a line in there - "all my verse will be "free". Happiest of secular New Years to you and yours. Peace & Love Matthew Anish

There's no rules in games of fools. There's no account for taste. You guild in gold and then you're told that it's all been a waste. Thank goodness that we have a net to catch us when we fall. For true friends never do forget and help you to stand tall. Peace. :) Oh, and this is a winning poem, hands down.

more like a kick in the teeth when you see some of the winning poems that don't comply with the contest requirement but then again that is up to the individual sponsor - can't please all of the people all of the time - just wish they didn't do HM's at all - great write Ilene good luck in the contest:-) Hugs jan xxx
