Notes About The Poem

I pared down the new poem I wrote a few days ago to fit this in the 136 words contest.

Longer version is titled TODAY.

His Gaze -Edited

Today I caught a young student staring at me.
This young man, who seldom comes to class,
greets me, nonetheless, with a beaming smile
the days he does show up!
This adventurer (who once described how
he had driven backroads of Alaska all by himself
to enjoy its raw beauty) is an unassuming, attractive man.

When I noticed him watching me,
he did not too quickly withdraw his gaze
as I would have expected someone to do.
His dreamy look held a soft touch of wistfulness.
It both flattered and puzzled me,
for I must be at least thirty-five years his senior.

When he left my classroom,
I was left to conjure
 my words for this poem.
In a different time and place
I probably would have followed up
 on what that gaze
had been about!

He wouldn't be the first to fall in love with his teach, and who could blame him. I got nothing new on so please don't waste your time looking, Take care, Richard

He wants something, possibly a grade undeserved from the standpoint of effort. Or maybe he was in a daze and not really looking at you at all, being just in his line of vision. Lovely piece, amazing what a simple look engendered from your pen, Andrea.

Yes, no telling what he was thinking. Enjoyed reading your winning work. I had a student once to give me an engagement ring but alas he was only 8 years old. I told him that one day he was going to meet a special young lady who would be perfect for him and he would live a very happy life with her. I wonder sometimes if that did happen? Congrats on your winning work. Sara

Oh, Andrea, the subtle hint of youth tempting age with a glance. A boost to the ego and a shock to the psyche. Thanks for participating in the contest.

Andrea, what is beautiful about this poem, is that you bare a little bit of soul, and a little bit of heart! Meru

This is perfect as is though I'm late and you've already changed it. I haven't even read about the contest so I can't speak to that element in the poem. Sorry I'm tardy. Soup mail. Love, CayCay

Andrea, You've got to win a little, lose a little, yes, and always have the blues a little. That's the story of, that's the glory of love. (Billy Hill) -Richard

This is so sweet Andrea. Age doesn't matter to some and in fact they prefer the age difference. I love the romantic vibes in this piece. I bet John will too. xxoo

G'day Andrea … perhaps a secret admirer who deleted the secret to gain your attention. Nice little tale Andrea - thank you - Lindsay
