This adventurer (who once described how he had driven backroads of Alaska all by himself to enjoy its raw beauty) is an unassuming, attractive man. When I noticed him watching me, he did not too quickly withdraw his gaze as I would have expected someone to do. His dreamy look held a soft touch of wistfulness. It both flattered and puzzled me, for I must be at least thirty-five years his senior. When he left my classroom, I was left to conjure my words for this poem. In a different time and place I probably would have followed up on what that gaze had been about!
