Hints of Autumn

Hints of Autumn

The air kisses night with a chill
As if summer forgets herself
In scarlet sunsets reveries
And ignores crickets whispered hints.

Summer days grow shorter still as
The air kisses night with a chill
When seconds race against the sun
Bearing clues of gold autumn tide.

Misty veils hide her fading smile
In amber red instead of green
The air kisses night with a chill
Thick dew waits to ice orange pumpkins

In maize afternoons summer dreams
Her autumn bridegroom takes her hand
To lead through blue frosty dawns when
The air kisses night with a chill.

The personification of Summer and Autumn is truly inspired. Congratulations on penning such an engaging write on transitional seasons as Summer slips her arms into the waiting grip of Autumn. Sincerest regards, Brian

My Dearest Rhyme Time Friend, I am enthralled by the cool nip felt in the late Summer splendor of your beautiful poem. I love the transition of Summer to Fall and your plush pen spills lush imagery that enchants and melts my heart. "The air kisses night with a chill" and "Misty veils hide her fading smile" and "In maize afternoons summer dreams" -- just a few gems here that deftly defines late August so exquisitely captured in the depths of your brilliant artistry. Your talent outshines summer herself, my sweet poetry sis! Best wishes for a win and warmest wishes sent on the crickets' evening song.. ~Susan

Sara, many, many thanks! I have to admit I have a hard time letting go of all of the delights of summer but I also have to admit I do love autumn with her promises of color, delicious foods, harvest bounty, impending holidays and the magic spell she casts on the world. Sending you all of the blessings of the seasons!

There is such a cool feel to your poem with hints of Autumn ! This is just in keeping with the changes at the fag end of summer ! The air is the one thing first affected by the change. The sultry air changes into cool air and then ensues all other changes ! I am sure this will have a top place in the winner's list ! All the Best dear Sam.

Thank you so much Valsa! I am truly honored by your lovely message! You are so right there is an order to the way things change as fall approaches and summer wanes. I felt that first change in the air the other night - that signal of change to come - that hint! So happy you enjoyed this poem. Thanks for standing with me to enjoy the cool air and changing colors. Blessings to you dear friend!

Thank you so much my friend! More and more I realize the distinct line between summer and autumn in nature, in our activities, even in our foods! Gone the salads of summer replaced by comfort food of stews and cider! So glad you enjoyed this poem. Even though I hate letting go of summer, I do love fall. Sending you blessings of cooler nights and a kaleidoscope of color.

best one I read. YOu gave yourself more leeway for spectacular imagery by not having it rhyme, but it's perfectly fine not to rhyme quatern. I think that I saw that in the rules, which was new for me!

Many, many thank you's Andrea! I had to read the requirements for a quatern several times just to make sure it didn't have to rhyme. That was also news for me! Had fun with autumn imagery which is so different from spring and summer - a real about face! I enjoyed your entry! All the best for the contest!
