Hemingway's Six
In our darkened room with shades drawn down,
Lights off, door closed. The staff has withdrawn
the other end of the ward, granting
Grief’s privacy as we cuddle in bed
Together, naked, holding our daughter.
When they brought her back to us, my Sweetheart
Begged me, “Take off your clothes and join me.
I need to feel all of you by my side!”
Although we have bathed both our faces
In tears this afternoon, the one cry we
Long to hear is denied to us – hers.
Her body we hold, her soul is with Him!
Jesus on the Cross! My side, lungs and heart
Have also been severed by that spear!
(An homage to Ernest Hemingway's famous six-word story, "For Sale, Baby Shoes, Never Used.")
