Notes About The Poem

heatwaves

We’re having a heatwave
our clothes are all sweat-stained
Everyone’s dressed to the minimum
my board-shorts are all dri-wick fabric
and a bikini top hides my little secrets

How hot is it?
Standing still counts as cardio
Still, everyone is suffering beautifully
I’ve got a handheld fan that sprays mist
and getting some rewarding second glances

Those coming ashore from yachts
dressed in Missoni and Camilla couture
act like perspiration is a styling trick
but they’re casually hugging shade,
like vampires avoiding sun

If fashion is fantasy. Sweat is reality.
The heat is very democratic.

The heat wave broke over here. Now we're just breathing smoke from the Ontario forest fires. Good point, standing cardio. Makes me wonder if just walking to the gym is sufficient. Don’t even have to go inside. Had considered becoming a mall walker. That’s a one mile air conditioned loop. / My cousin in Italy writes it’s been so hot there, her thoughts have melted. / Interesting point how environmental effects strip away conceits of status and pretensions of differences. / Wonderful piece <3

Not so bad this morning. Yesterday it was like always being on the wrong side of a campfire. The sky was warm gray and Sun was coral/pink all day.

Mall walking sounds perfect - Charles and I have been jogging our miles starting at 5am. How bad is the smoke?
