Rhyme Scheme: a a b a b b a

English Historical Fiction Authors: Making an Offer of Marriage

"Love is the only gold." Alfred, Lord Tennyson With a small boxed jewel in hand, he stands before the Duke’s grand gate. Gold is that imposing entrance so beautifully ornate. A shadow of fear keeps flickering across the young man’s mind though Lady Beth had vowed that for him alone she’d wait. His friends all mutter Lady Beth won't be inclined to let her life with her lowly lover’s life be intertwined. Will his lady accept his betrothal ring? Oh, what shall be his fate?

Andrea, nice way to ask a question in poetry. We really never know do we? I liked the Tennyson quote...there's some wisdom there! Smiles!

Congratulations on your rhymed piece even though rhyme was not required here. Love the twist which leaves us, the audience, wondering still??? Hopefully in Tennyson style it wasn't "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all."

Congratulations, dear poet, on your top placement in this poetry contest with a jewel boxed with golden words laid at the gate of Conatance despite the mutter of shadows.

Its like reading and an ancient poem from the archives of literature, how profound and well articulated with brilliant rhymes and in such cadence! Love the quote. Love is the only gold, and weighs heavier than any jewel! And i love how you’ve written “ to let her life with her lowly lover’s life be intertwined. Will his lady accept his betrothal ring? Oh, what shall be his fate?” would love to know his fate! Best wishes! Sending you light always

Beautifully written in an 'oldish style that hums along in true, compelling-story wiles. Had a gray day to-day, hope this Friday was kinder to you (technically it's Sat, 2am here) ... CayCay

thanks. the poem just ended up being this way. No, yesterday no better than any other day. Some days I don't know how I go on. I know you know that feeling too.

This is intriguing.. clearly anyone who has to propose takes a beat, realising there is a point of undeniable transition - whether an enthusiastic 'yes'.. or a reluctant 'no'. A big imposing gateway boundary to traverse! More so, if imposing more than simply metaphorical.. I pray the story concludes happily. Enjoyed this. Blessings.. S:) x
