I don't think there's anything wrong with cliches (with the clincher) IF you can do something new and different with them - like you did here with "hand to mouth" being both literal AND figurative. I once entered a contest here where the challenge was too use a cliche and make it into something new ... it was called The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree.

Wow. Like we were discussing earlier ... words carrying “double duty” ... ! Cleverness aside ... On a more serious note ... I’m a bit leery of moving into a cashless society.

There's a lot of anticliché sentiment around here but personally, I love deploying preloaded wordage. & me too, before this pandemic thing I always carried cash, I was a "tap" virgin.
