Halibut

I’m not a fan of seafood but don’t mind
a tuna salad or fried fish with fries.
In England, that’s called fish ‘n’ chips. I find
the same name used on menus here. My eyes
spy that title easily. I am awed.
By a nice huge serving of fish ‘n’ chips.
The fish is likely halibut or cod,
but the one that passes through my lips
most often is halibut (a flatfish).
It’s firmer – more substantial – than cod is.
However, it costs more than cod. I wish
it wasn’t so dang expensive. Gee whiz!
“Just for the halibut” I ask for it!
But that's no whim; I like it quite a bit.

The French or "julienne" cut fried potato is said to have originated in Belgium. If you order a burger and chips in America your liable to receive a bag of potato-chips with your ham-less beef ham-burger. Imagine then, the power of the "Kings English" disrupting the more perfect union of the colonists its provocations to insatiable, perpetual warfare, even without fried onions and a toasted bun.

I thought "fish and chips" originated with the Brits and "chips" avoided the historical animus shared by that other party.

Strangely when we ask for fish n chips, we expect french fries and not actual potato chips!

I'm all for fish n chips or maybe even fish AND chips, as long it comes with a little dip! By that I mean, Andrea's poem is mighty keen): Well said, Ms. Poet Queen. So Pip, Pip, Tally Ho, Cheerio and away I go!

Don't batter me for loving Fish 'n' Chips - Or for the way I say it betwixt lips - An 'n' or an and - I don't understand - Why anyone would give this 'n' such quips.…… Belle

Heya Andrea, What is it about these people that think they’re an absolute authority on the English language, have they ever heard the word (vernacular) before, probably not, they need to come down to sea level and live amongst the masses instead of saying “Let them eat fish cake” Fish ‘n’ Chips is the people’s choice, cheers David

For anyone reading the circus show here, a certain somebody had commented that fish 'n' chips is not how the English say it. My response was to say that many Americans say it as fish 'n' chips. Even how we pronounce it is Fish n chips. I elaborated that we often reduce "and" to the simple sound of "n". Go 'n get it, for example. She has deleted comments that people gave as rebuttals. But I don't think she can delete mine or the others here who have commented first. She is trying to make it look like I said that the ENGLISH say it the way Americans do. I never said any such thing, but my comment back to her was deleted. I have no idea how people on the British Isles usually say it. Even if my poem says it's CALLED fish 'n' chips in England, I was going by menus I read when I spent time in London for a few days years ago

Dropping back with many congrats on your win Andrea, Perhaps YOU should contact admin and complain about the negative comments that are being left, and the fact she has removed YOUR comments to her. it really isn't appropriate for her to spoil your poem and be nasty to others - I for one am British and stand by Fish N chips being correct. write on and don't let her get you down !

I say it both ways Andrea and also call it chish and fips lol and fish and chip shops can be Fish and chips or Fish N chips:-) If anyone has the right to complain to admin it is YOU. she is acting like the playground bully and then going running to the teacher when someone fights back, the fact she removed your comments is totally unacceptable.

Thanks, Jan. Do you actually SAY the word AND when you speak of fish "and" chips? Or do you reduce to "n" as I do? Just curious how your pronunciation differs from Americans'.

Tell me this... if Julia thinks she's right about everything she's commented, why doesn't she allow our rebuttals to stand instead of deleting them? She can't delete this. So, tell us, Julia...why don't you have the courage to allow our opinions to show?

To Lin Lane, I never mentioned what Americans call it as that was irrelevant against AD's disputed line of "In England, that's called 'fish 'n' chips." If you think it's a triviality, which it becomes when you answer me back and expend lots of lines so far, why do YOU continue?

To Lin Lane - In her poem, she said "fish 'n' chips " was said by English people. We don't say that, actually. Andrea then compounded it to you by calling my pointed out fact about her poem, an opinion. A fact is never an opinion.

Clearly, she can't stand having her word questioned. My comment to her below was removed but I stand by the fact that everyone has an opinion. Some should not be given if it's offensive. *I've just reposted it. If she's removing my responses, that's pretty cowardly.

Entertaining poem though I evade fish and chips, as too greasy. I never tasted halibut and hate cod. But I love Mediterranean fish like bream, simmered in foil with a little white wine and some light spices. But then everyone has his taste. I love such fish. I believe you can get bream in the USA. Anyway, may you have a tasty meal. Hugs, my friend.
