Half-Light

Those early morning walks not long ago,
through quiet fields, bathing in citrine tones,
the sunrise in no hurry, pace is slow,
gift-wrapped dawn, a present for me alone.
But now, like river waters in a drought,
daylight contracts, I savour every sip,
the late month's arms of night are spreading out
on shorter days they now tighten their grip.
A sombre season, this, my mood is low,
a melancholy feeling fills my chest
sun sinks behind it's shroud, I watch it go,
wish I could sail off with it to the west.
Each night I feel it's loss but should not mourn,
for our sunset is someone else's dawn.

Viv, I love your gift wrapped dawn, unhurried sunrise, tighter gripping days - wonderful imagery. And the last line is such a great metaphor for more than sunsets and dawns.

Brilliantly descriptive Mr Viv and I know people do suffer with low moods with the dark nights ... but as long as I am still awake in the morning to see the sun THAT is the best gift to me so hang onto that gift wrapped dawn (love that line) :-) hugs Jan xx

Thanks, Jan. My eldest bro and I look forward to twelve noon on December 21st, when we meet in a pub and raise a glass to the fact that from then on, every day gets brighter by a minute. Improves our morale. Viv x :)

What a beautiful image rich write Viv. A wonderful last line but the thought doesn't change the reality of our own lives.

Indeed, James, I wasn't trying to be too philosophical, just pointing out that the sunrises I enjoy were previously someone else's sunsets, the world still turns, no matter how we feel, and we get another chance of better days. Thanks for popping by and commenting. Regards, Viv
