I have stayed the steady step Of my foot’s momentum And took some time to rest A moment from the sun I’ve listened to the quiet hush In dim pavilioned space And heard the chipmunk chirp Alarmed with cautious haste I’ve heard the birds their song release And bent my ear to hear Their welcoming and joyful sound When I, and they, were near I’ve felt the modest trust Once known I bore no threat And felt acceptance in the woods Though still but just a guest –
