- Grandparents -

Grandmothers and grandfathers how they look,
how can we see that there is a grandmother or a grandfather
When I was a little girl we could see a grandmother and a grandfather
Grandparents used hats, glasses, and walking stick
The skin of their face was weathered and wrinkled
Some had teeth they put in a glass in the evening

Grandmothers always had time for a glass of juice and a hug
She was never impatient, tie shoelaces with pleasure
Always in floral dresses, which smelled like grandma
Grandmothers wont not be at work tomorrow, she has time for an adventure
She does not skip a single word, to be finished soon
It was always sweets in grandmother's hand bag
She never spared, but shared with a beautiful smile

Grandfathers were a bit more restrained,
bit concerned about the day's news in their newspaper
He would like to go for a walk, and he walks with small cautious steps
When he meet someone he knows, he lifts a bit on his hat and nod
He has very little hair on his head, and his head shines in the sun
Grandfathers have a strong hand to hold, I was confident in his hand
He could tell me what all the birds called, he was so wise

Everyone should experience an old-fashioned grandmother and grandfather
one that does not have a television, computer or washing machine
A grandmother and grandfather who always have good time

But it was in the past ..... not today...

Times have changed for everyone, Anne Lise. Grandparents and Grandchildren are no longer the same. That was a simpler time, my friend. Very nice, I enjoyed this one.... Robert.

You are so right. My Grandmother was just like that and I loved her dearly. Today I am a Grandmother and am thrilled to be. We sit with our tablets and iphones on the couch together and talk. Times sure change. Lovely.

Just read a number of your recent poems and found so much resonance. Particularly Virgin Birth with its underlying threat of playing with Nature an dthe 25 word challenge. Keep up the good work.

What a beautiful piece of nostalgia and so full of truth....we rail against aging now because youth is so idolized but I am with you ...I always care for and nurture the elderly ...they have stories to tell and wisdom to give. Big Hugs, SuZ

This sounds a lot my grandpa... spends a lot of time outside, on the porch swing, either reading a newspaper or his bible. Your last line is sad yet that's how it goes... time moves on... but we thank goodness for photographs, right? Great tribute to two people that meant so much to you!

This is absolutely true my dearest friend Anne-Lise. Your awesome poem brings back the memories when my very dear granddad and grandma always come to visit us at home when they were still alive. My granddad let me sit on his lap and told me fables. While listening to him, I was playing with his hat while my grandma happily talked to my mom and dad. A marvelous write indeed! Thank you so much for sharing and your very inspiring and wonderful comments on my write! Have a great day! love much, LG

It was the time of love and care and altruism. Not of self interest and having a good time! Very observing social issue that merits the attention of the experts. I for one have appreciated its content! Wonderful work!

Oh yes, Anne Lise! (I have a sister named Lise) My grandma always wore her black hat with those thick nylons and high-heal corrective(?) type shoes...My grandpa pretended to be an old grouch...always evicting us from his favorite chair...a very blunt, to-the-point pastor...thanks for the memories my friend! - Tim
