Giraffes
Giraffes communicate in tones
Too low for us to hear what they say
They nap two minutes at a time
To watch for predators night and day
Consuming hundreds of pounds of leaves
Rarely is it water they seek
Moisture comes from plants, their only food
They may not drink for more than a week!
Often you see birds on their back,
The birds eat bugs there, we can't see
Their spotted fur is distinct to each one
Just like fingerprints on you or me
A giraffe has two hair-covered horns
The males use them, to playfully fight
Swinging their heads, to wrap their necks
Is called necking, (but they don't bite!)
Giraffes live about fifteen years
If captive, about twenty five
Hopefully they live a long life
For us to enjoy while they're alive!
