Notes About The Poem

September 23, 2025

For the contest, "Ghouls and Goblins" by Joseph May

Ghostly

Ghosts at one time scared me
However, I then grew
Only to find people
Strictly the ones I knew
Thinking thoughts unbridled
lost in Neverland--true
Yield fear like ghosts that flew

Thank you so much, Linda. I appreciate you. It turns out I did the poem wrong for the contest anyhow. Oh well...

Dear Ann, your poem is so cleverly expressive of fears based on superstitions transitioning to fears based in reality. I was especially struck by "Thinking thoughts unbridled/lost in Neverland--true".. scary, indeed! Your golden pen shines with the beauty of your artistry, my gifted poet friend. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Dear Susan, Thank you for your always lovely comments. I've actually had one foot in Neverland as I'm trying to write some fantasy stories for Young Adults. Even if I go nowhere with them, I'm having such fun!

That's a striking poem! It moves from the tangible fear of ghosts to the realization that the unbridled thoughts and actions of the people we know can be just as unsettling or fearful.

Thanks, Danny! Yes, that's what I meant to convey exactly!

Such a wonderful commentary on fear of the ghostly world, Ann! Your poem is so expressive reaching into the emotion of fear!!! Just an FYI! In a pleiades each line begins with a word starting with the same letter as the first word in the first line. So many people here in the soup have helped me I wanted to pass on their kindness. I hope that is OK with you as I love this take on the contest. Best wishes a win. Blessings.

Thank you, Sam! I absolutely read the description of pleiades wrong, and I wonder how I did that! I really appreciate your gentle correction. I need to slow down, I guess :)
