From Now On

“From now on, I’ll be good, Mom,” my son said.
This came after not too few tears for him I'd shed.
It used to be once he got out of bed,
my boy would get in trouble! He was led
by some strange drumbreat pounding in his head!
While other children liked to have books read
to them, he’d throw his to the floor instead!

He wasn’t treated cruelly or underfed,
yet often out in public, I would fill with dread
from his behavior or when he saw red.
He broke his toy cars, his bike and sled.
I felt like I was hanging by a thread;
I wondered if my boy would ever wed!
The year he started changing, my fears fled.
"From now on, I'll be good, Mom," my son said.

Note: This is only marginally fictionalized. Later he joined the Marines,
put himself through law school and wed!

Excellent monorhyme, Andrea. Before my grandson started to school, he used to go somewhere with me or my daughter--usually a birthday party!--then pitch a fit, refusing to GO IN! Thank God, he stopped acting that way when he started to school! Janice

When I see red, I can act the same way, exactly! I understand, and empathise. Andrea, this is a nice mono-rhyme. Thanks for sharing!

Mine took till at least age 10 to simmer down. I guess he played hookey from high school and other things I learned of later, but he was smart enough to stay at the required attendance levels to graduate. haha! (He is a DA now, so he was learning to use his brain as he matured)

HaHa! I had one of those! He didn't go into the military, but he did wed once. He had his 36th anniversary this year!

Quite a touching story, Andrea. It's even more so, being that it is mostly fact not fiction. They all turn around in the end..growing up comes with its unique pains. A story well told.
