Friendly Fire

The campfire reaches
Lighting the night
Rolling the logs
Red embers take flight
Sharing our memories
Eating nuts for snacks
Spitting shells in the fire
The fire spitting them back
We laugh at jokes
And sarcastic remarks
Smoke waters our eyes
We run from the sparks
The conversation lags
As the evening tires
We all kick back
Put more wood on the fire
Center of attention
Entertaining as well
We become entranced
Succumb to it's spell
Unrecognized faces
On the bark as it burns
Enchantment transcends
All lack of concern
The warmth lives inside
As we slowly turn in
Our friend the fire
Has cleansed us again

I have fond memories as a child sitting around the campfire...watching the sparks going into the night sky. This fine poem brought a bit of nostalgia to my heart. Thanks for your visit earlier.

Thank you, Lindsay. You are so right. It is the best place to bond, especially with sons/daughters. Being in the outdoors away from all of life's distractions, you just can't beat it. I really appreciate your support and you taking the time to read. Peace my friend:)

this is a wonderful poem, daniel - especially because when i first saw the title, i was thinking of when a soldier gets killed by his own side's bullets. i much prefer your topic and you've painted such a warm cozy picture with your words...

Cherished! Thank you so much for taking time to read and comment. Anytime a parent can enjoy the company of a grown child that has left home is a good memory, even if there is slight conflict. Sometimes we as parents forget our children are adults!

I love this and being transported to my own campfires; the memories and feelings. This is a family gem, as well as a reader's gem, and should be read at some point in the future when all are gathered ... CayCay

Thank you, CayCay. My children don't really think much of my poetry they look at it more like something to keep an old man busy. My son is however putting book together for me but only because he has the necessary computer skills. I digress, I appreciate your kindness and apologize for my rambling. Peace to you my lady:)

Thank you, Tim. They are truly a blessing. Moments like those get fewer and farther between. Just not often enough as far as I'm concerned. I appreciate your visit and hope you will share many evenings with your family around a nice friendly fire. Peace my friend:)
