Forest Tales
Stepping out of a canoe somewhere under the clouds,
I move over the plains, into the midlands,
Above the coastal landscape, below the anthills of the savannah,
Along tangled vegetation lining the stream banks.
My days are spent in awe, my nights in starlight.
From below, my eyes trace the glaring skies.
A momentary tranquillity sets in
As my feet wander on edgy pathways
Through the terrain of beauty under night shades.
Sounds and Life of the Forest
Here, the chirps of birds and crickets echo in the thickets,
Whispers from forest trees mingle with the whine of mosquitoes
In a moonlight nocturne.
The cold weather surrounds us;
Our breaths rise in vapour with every word.
Clouds hover just above my eyes,
And dew endures throughout the forenoon.
Apples and wild fruits hang from trees,
Tinkling with every gentle wind.
Only one road exists here—
No cars, no buses, no trucks;
The borders of the forest are undefined.
The people are never still, moving up and down hills,
Perhaps searching for a kill,
Or gathering food for their evening meal.
They do not crave flashy gadgets or kiss technology;
Not because they are unaware,
But because survival demands a more solemn respect.
Work is done on the ground, with hands,
Like the borehole behind the shrub—requiring only effort.
Every soul in the forest is a pantheon.
From mankind to animals, to the breathing evergreen pines,
Time bends: Sunday feels like Friday.
Berries and nuts are devoured daily,
And people can turn almost savage before they notice.
I too became one, at the forefront of creation,
In this enchanted oasis.
Colourful and vibrant is the scene:
Birds, butterflies, and insects dancing beneath blooming jades;
Swamps filled with hippos and elephants.
We rise early to pace the hours.
Footprints trail through the woods;
Evening invites a gathering by the fireside.
We become vespers to ancient tales—
Mysteries of trees and animal life,
Told to horrify, to enchant, to teach.
Our minds become canvases,
Painted with the wisdom of the old.
Rains set in,
New life blooms from beneath dead leaves.
Light and sound mingle,
Thunder and lightning enchanting the skies.
The forest, deeper in its heart, divulges the tetra-seasons.
The virgin forest lives through fertile periods,
And the aftermath: thick layers of green surrounding wild streams.
Beauty wears a face; it is shown in this land.
Nature knows no bounds; it is everywhere.
