Flight

You gave me wings
    to experience the
         freedom of flight
               my love.

You let me soar
    the skies and beyond
         into other universes
              where consciousness

has no boundaries,
    feels no weight,
         nor limitations
              of the earthbound,

only coherence with other
    soul travelers exploring
         the many dimensions
              in light form.

How could I keep
    begging you to stay
         when your earthly body
              yearned for that same
                   freedom of flight from
                        a world without

which you will not
    return in my lifetime.
We joined our hearts in vows of
              “until death do we part”
and I know I must accept
                         your departure with all

the love you would
    have offered me
         had my departure
               preceded yours.

We always said that death
    is but a station
         on our journey home
              to the afterlife.

It is my turn now
    to give you the same
         freedom you gave me
               when we met.

I often see you now in
    my peripheral vision,
         just a ghostly glimpse
              that lets me know
                   you see me

and you are still looking
out for me as the protective
         mate you were.

 I continue to fly now
         but mostly at night
              as my body sleeps.

I miss your masculine
    embrace and my
          heart still often weeps.

Hi Connie, This is such a beautiful write in so many different ways. The heart of love does sing from your pen. It is hard to release those we love even though we know they shall ever be with us, the love can never die, it can only grow stronger. This is true poetry that comes from a loving soul. Congratulations for your win in the contest. When one writes from the heart it is always a winner. Has to be a fave, Connie. Hugs always ..... Mike. XX

A beautiful poem, so well written. Full of Love that is eternal and blessed to have an earthly spouse that loved you and accepted your love as well. I think it is beautiful when one goes on before the other, and the remaining one is able to let go and let eternal life offer all that's available to the other person. At the soul level He is always with you, and now knows how to truly Love you unconditionally. :-) Smiles ~ Blessings along with my hugs, Bill

He did love me unconditionally Bill. That is how we remained together happily married for forty years though we were opposites. We put each other first which is the secret to a long lasting marriage. I miss him but know he is blissfully happy. Thank you. Blessings xxoo

Connie, you have combined two of the great themes of poetry into this masterpiece: flight and love. The heart is both light and heavy to read of the carefree weightlessness flight offers, tempered by having to say goodbye to your flying partner and soul mate. You write from the heart as few are able to do, with a gravitas of personal pain but with the overlay of love, hope, and faith. Exquisite, my friend, and going into my Faves. Congrats on your win. I am so honored by your Fave. Blessings xxoo

It's an overflow of true feelings that needed no thinking or search for words!!! True love and true feelings here - giving rise to an amazing piece!
