Notes About The Poem

Feathered Wings

A majestic golden eagle
wakens to the cool morning air.
And preens and prims its flight feathers
grooming each with diligent care.

Flies buzz over yesterday’s kill
scraps warmed by the rays of the sun.
And as night shadows disappear
darkness is defeated, dawn’s won.

A tree top branch provides a perch
from which it can survey the land.
And launching high into the sky
its territory's swiftly scanned.

Hungry fledglings flex feathered wings
stretching formidable muscles.
And the approach of their mother
is greeted by sibling tussles.

While calling and circling close by
she urges them to do their best.
And the eaglets take to the air
no longer shackled to their nest.

A lovely and informative poem, Emile. Deservedly a winner...congratulations. // Noted Connie's comment; seems like we understood the rules differently...I thought the words had to be in the same order as set out by the sponsor; that sort of slightly tied my hands:) ~ Regards // paul

Excellent write, Emile. I especially like the second verse because it establishes that there had been a battle, resulting in a fresh kill. Then you cleverly portrayed another battle...the Dawn defeated the night. Congratulations!

Congratulations on your wonderful win! Emile, guess I was not the only one who misunderstood that the words had to be exact like you and I have them. Sure would have been easier to write had I known that. I knew yours would be a top winner! #7
