Farewell Lincoln: a Reflection

April 15th, 1865, The cries of America went out, We lost the gentle giant that worked to hold the threads of our country together. Our American Cousin was the last that he heard, Except for the cries of his killer, “Sic Semper Tyrannis!” The consolation we receive is the hangings of four, And the life sentences of a few more. A parade of a corpse that’s losing its form, The way for people to remember you, even those that may scorn. We may not all have loved him, but even the fools realize When he was gone it opened our eyes. Without him, we had slavery, Without him, we had a different life. Without him, we had division and strife. The Civil War killed many, but at least we had someone who recognized what was right. Goodbye Mr. President, Thank you for the time well served. Goodbye Mr. President, A bullet in your head and hole in America’s heart is not what a man like you deserved.
