Falls Pumpkin Sits
by Dawne Zacharias
Fall's blustery days
Leaves floating in air land softly upon my head
The dried leaves then crunching at my feet
The cold wind, the smell of crisp air
Opens the wind-o to my soul
Fall's memory of an earlier time
Jumping into a raked mountain of leaves,
"Come join me," was my plea.
My walk to school in mornings glow
The great oak tree's boughs,
bowing from winds rushing through
reaching and touching overhead
A radiant halo of color above
The twinkle of sunlight as
I look up thru the leaves radiance
The smell of wood's burning found in the air
I rub my hands a hold-out for the hearth,
yet around the hill, back home from school, I go.
A pumpkin sits and awaits me there
carving designs float thru my mind,
A smile upon my lips on my approach
and now a big grin a wind-o, I can see mom
she is there with my carving tools within.
A bowl of hot chili she has prepared
as I take off my jacket to begin.
