Expectations

Expectations of the newly wed
Are higher than the sky,
To live in passion until they're dead
With life as easy as pie.

Expectations change with the years.
A more subdued view is found.
Through the ups and downs, smiles and tears
We expect our love to stick around.

Expectations years after the vow
Revolve around loyalty and trust.
Love is rarely mentioned now
But companionship is a must.

We expect our mate to be true
And to be there by our side.
To comfort us when we're blue
And till the end of days abide.

Those expectations of our youth
We've forgotten along the way.
We've settled for a different truth,
That the romance doesn't always stay.

Me, personally, I hope to exceed those expectations and have the romance blossom through the years and my companion grow deeper and deeper in love with me as our anniversaries mount. But, I love your poem just the same and am sure it will do well in the contest. As usual, I think your rhyme and meter are perfect. Nice job, Francine. Joe

Sadly, the romance does fade in many relationships, Francine. I would like to think of a way to keep the fires of passion burning, but sometimes couples become more like good friends than lovers. Great entry for Paula's contest! Wishing you success. Love, Carolyn

The divorce rate has been as much as seventy percent (that's greater than two out of three) at times. Does a marriage certificate have any value anymore? You have described everything quite well with your words and rhyming.

Excellent entry Francine on the expectations of life in general but that first set of lines about the newlyweds is PRICELESS especially the passion part.. great one..good luck...
